Muhsen al-Barazi, a former adviser and cabinet minister under President Shukri al-Quwatli, switched sides to join General Husni al-Zaim, architect of Syria's first coup d'etat, in March 1949. Barazi served as his senior consultant, and then became Prime Minister. Zaim relied on him heavily to legitimize the new regime in the eyes of Egypt, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia, three countries in which Barazi enjoyed excellent relations with top officials. On August 14, 1949, Zaim and Barazi was arrested and killed by engineer of Syria's second coup, Sami al-Hinnawi.
