Abdulsalam Aref, who later became president of Iraq, was one of the Iraqi Free Officers who toppled the monarchy of King Faisal II in July 1958. Abdul-Hamid al-Sarraj was the recently appointed Syrian Minister of Interior in the United Arab Republic (UAR). The photo was taken at the gates of the Presidential Palace in Damascus.
