Ahmad Iskandar Ahmad was born in Homs in 1944. He joined the Baath Party at an early age and became director of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) in 1966. President Hafez al-Assad enjoyed reading his articles during the October War of 1973, appointing him Information Minister in September 1974. Ahmad did to Hafez al-Assad's image what Mohammad Hasannein Haykal did to that of Gamal Abdul Nasser. He glorified him in the Syrian press, made sure that Syrian TV covers his activities in great detail, and convinced him to errect statues all over the country. He died after losing a battle with cancer on December 29, 1983.
