Jami al-Ulshi was appointed Minister of Defense replacing Yusuf al-Azma after the Battle of Maysaloun in 1920. When Prime Minister Ala al-Din Droubi was assassinated in August 1920, he replaced him briefly as Premiere during the early weeks of the Mandate. He returned to office briefly during the era of his friend and political ally, President Taj al-Din al-Hasani, in 1943. When Hasani died in office, Ulshi became Acting President for three months, then retired from politics.
