A rare picture of General Sami al-Hinnawi, the Chief-of-Staff of the Syrian Army who toppled and killed President Husni al-Za’im on August 1949. Hinnawi was toppled four months later, in December 1949, by General Adib al-Shishakli. He suffered brief arrest and was then exiled to Lebanon where he himself was killed in 1951.
