Prime Minister Jamil Mardam Bey presents his resignation to President Hashim al-Atasi. The reasons are because he failed to advance independence talks with France, after signing the Treaty of 1936 with French Prime Minister Leon Blum. France had reneged on its promises of gradual evacuation from Syria, because of the looming war in Europe, and Mardam Bey had been held responsible by the Syrians.
