New 10-2006: Syrian President Shukri al-Quwatli, out-of-office and living in exile in Egypt, attending an official function with Egyptian President Gamal Abdul-Nasser in 1953. Quwatli stayed in Egypt after he was toppled from power in Syria in 1949, until he returned to become president again in 1955. He befriended Nasser after the Egyptian officer came to power in Egypt in 1952 and Nasser became one of Quwatli’s strongest supporters in his bid to return to the presidency. When becoming president, Quwatli created a strong alliance with Nasser, resulting in the Syrian-Egyptian Union of 1958.
