An early picture of General Shawkat Shuqayr, the Lebanese Druze officer in the Syrian Army, who served as Chief-of-Staff under President Adib al-Shishakli in 1953-1954. Shuqayr was harshly criticized by the Druze for refusing to take action against the Syrian President when Shishakli was bombing the Druze Mountain in 1953.
