The Druze leader Sultan al-Atrash (right) being embraced by Dr Abd al-Rahman Shahbandar in 1937. The two men had spent over ten years in exile for having co-planned and led the Syrian Revolt of 1925-1927. They remained good friends and loyal allies until Shahbandar was killed by the French in 1941.
